Notes on attention
The five things you actually need from your day
Strip away the tools and the day asks for a small number of things. We count five: understand, prioritize, act, remember, move forward. They are the pillars of ATTUNEFY, and they are the frame we use for every decision about what to build.
Most software serves one of them well and quietly damages the rest. A messaging app helps you understand and then floods your ability to prioritize. A task manager helps you act and forgets on your behalf. A calendar remembers and never asks whether the meeting should exist. We wanted a product that holds all five at once.
Understand
Before anything else, you need to know what is going on. Not the full stream, but the shape of it. Who is waiting on you. What changed since you last looked. Which conversations are warming up and which are going cold.
This is where most of the raw attention in a day is spent, and most of it is wasted on things you did not need to read to understand. ATTUNEFY does the reading first, across every source, and hands you the picture instead of the pile.
Prioritize
Understanding is not the same as knowing what to do first. A dozen things can be true about your morning; only one of them can happen next.
Prioritizing well is a judgement about people, promises and time. This customer over that newsletter. The commitment you made in yesterday’s meeting over the document that was shared with you by accident. The founder’s question, because the window is closing, over the invoice, because it is not.
We think this judgement is the heart of the product. It is also the part we are most careful with, which is why it runs in the open and shows its reasoning every time.
Act
A signal that needs you should come with the thing you would do about it. Reply. Book the call. Send the document you said you would send. Hand it to someone else.
When the action lives three applications away from the signal, the gap fills with friction, and friction is where good intentions go to die. So the composer sits beside the evidence, the calendar is a chip rather than a tab, and a finished action closes the loop where it was opened.
Remember
The most expensive words in a working day are the ones you say and then forget. I will send that tomorrow. Let me check and come back to you. Leave it with me.
Those promises are made in meetings, in passing, in the last line of an email. Nobody writes them down, because writing them down is the work you were trying to avoid. ATTUNEFY listens for them, in your own words, and holds them until they are kept. Not as a nagging list. As a quiet ledger that only speaks when something is due.
Move forward
The last pillar is the reason for the other four. A day where you understood, prioritized, acted and remembered is a day that ended somewhere different from where it began.
That is the feeling we are building for. Not inbox zero, which is an absence. Progress, which is a direction.
Your attention multiplies everything.
Everything you give attention to grows. The relationship you answered, the deal you moved, the idea you finally wrote down. And everything you did not give attention to stays exactly where it was. That is not a productivity slogan. It is an accounting identity, and it is why we treat attention as the thing the product is protecting.
The questions a day actually asks
Put plainly, the five pillars are five questions. We use them as a test for every screen.
- What is happening that I should know about?
- Of all of it, what needs me now?
- What can I do about it, right here?
- What did I promise, and to whom?
- Am I further along than I was this morning?
If a feature cannot answer one of those, it does not ship. If it answers one at the expense of another, it goes back to the drawing board.
People, places, progress
The three words under our name are the same idea from a different angle. People, because almost everything that matters in a working life is a relationship. Places, because those relationships now live across a dozen surfaces that were never designed to talk to each other. Progress, because the point of paying attention is to move.
We are building ATTUNEFY for the days when all five are hard. If yours are, we would like to hear from you.
